Goucher College released the second set of results from their three-part Spring 2018 poll. They surveyed 800 Marylanders between February 12 through the 17 on a wide range of issues.
Out of all the different opinions, there was one topic most people agreed on – the opioid epidemic.
An overwhelming majority, 82 percent, viewed opioids and heroin as a major problem plaguing the state. Eleven percent of people polled considered it a minor problem.
More than half of respondents, 52 percent, said they know someone who has been addicted to opioids. And a majority of people, 81 percent, also agree that people need medical treatment to beat addiction.
On the topic of term limits, 75 percent of those surveyed are in favor of having them.
The Governor is limited to two consecutive four-year terms but there are no restrictions in the General Assembly.
Fifty-six percent of those in favor of term limits think two terms, or eight years, is an appropriate amount.
Governor Larry Hogan has put forth a bill this year that would establish term limits in the General Assembly. Long-time Senate President Mike Miller has said he was against the idea.
"The voice of wisdom, the voice of seniority are gone and you have the lobbyists, the staff people running the people's business,” said Miller who has served in the Senate since 1975.
A hearing on the bill is set for next Monday.
The poll also surveyed opinions on the minimum wage. Maryland's minimum wage is $9.25 and it’s set to increase to $10.10 on July 1. However, 46 percent support raising it to $15 per hour. Thirty-one percent oppose it.
When it comes to banning tackle football for children under the age of 14, Marylanders are split down the middle. Forty-five percent support a ban while 49 percent are against one.
There's currently a bill proposing a ban. A hearing is set on March 2.
